When you learn to drive, you must practice. If you break your arm, you go to the doctor. If you have insomnia, you must do the same thing. You cannot let embarrassment or anxiety beat you! Read on to find some sleep solutions without someone discouraging you.

Dont read right before going to bed. You may love the time you have right before bed to get a few chapters in, but really you are stimulating your body. If youre battling insomnia thats the last thing that you want to do. So keep the books out of the room.

Your pituitary gland produces melatonin which helps regulate your sleep. When the pituitary gland does not receive enough sunlight to produce vitamin D, you will have trouble falling asleep at night. Try to get about 10 or 15 minutes of sun every day so that your pituitary gland can work properly and help you fall asleep.

Some people believe that it is not a good idea to eat before bedtime, but this is not true if you want to sleep soundly. If you eat a snack that is high in carbohydrates before you go to bed, you will be able to fall asleep easier. The carbohydrates cause your blood sugar to spike and when the levels fall, you are in a perfect position to fall asleep.

If you have RLS (restless legsyndrome), you are suffering from a condition that makes it hard to relax. Sometimes the legs hurt or twitch, and you feel like you must move them continuously. Your doctor can help you treat this condition.

Try using earplugs. Its often the sounds around the home or outside that are causing insomnia. So the best thing that you can do is stop yourself from hearing them. You cant stop traffic or birds, but you can block your ear canals with plugs. It may be just the silence you need.

Write in a diary every day. Include a diet diary, exercise log and anxiety journal. Then look at the amount of rest you are getting. Once you know what will help you get sleep, you can do it.

Exercise

For people who are having trouble sleeping, sometimes changing the things they do during the day will help them sleep at night. One thing that will help them sleep is to cut out any exercise before going to bed. Exercise will stimulate the body and increase the heart rate, two things which are not helpful in falling asleep.

Be more proactive about the stress in your life, if you suffer with chronic insomnia. Stress is a leading cause of insomnia, so start eliminating the sources whenever possible, and do things for yourself that alleviate stress. Meditation or yoga can help, as can other forms of regular exercise. The less you stress, the more you sleep.

If you are waking up because your legs are uncomfortable, talk to your doctor about restless leg syndrome. There are a myriad of causes for this disorder, but sadly, there is no cure. There are some strategies which can help, such as exercise, calcium/magnesium supplements and even smoking marijuana, and your doctor can advise you on what to try.

Nutrition

Drink copious amounts of vitamin D during the day to help with your sleep. This vitamin will help your muscles relax and strengthen your bones during the night. This will also reduce the tension that is caused by lack of nutrition, which will make you feel more comfortable as the night wears on.

Now that you know a thing or two, go ahead and treat your insomnia. If nothing works for you, it may be time to talk to a doctor. Insomnia leads to tremendous side effects, threatening your lifespan and leading to suffering. You can beat insomnia, just take the next step!
